In 30 years as an investigative reporter, TV producer and writer I have covered miscarriages of justice, medical negligence cases and financial scandal; written and produced award-winning current affairs and history documentaries; and written several books.
My work includes programmes on the mysterious deaths of MI6 agent Gareth Williams and weapons expert Dr David Kelly, and many true crime documentaries, including Steeltown Murders: Hunting A Serial Killer (BBC One, 2023), which was nominated for a True Crime Award; six episodes of Cold Case Forensics (ITV1, 2023 – ) investigating the scientific and detective work which solved murders such as those of Stephen Lawrence and Roberto Calvi; and The Pembrokeshire Murders: Catching the Gameshow Killer (ITV1, 2021).
Two of my programmes, Lest We Forget (2019) and Beti and David (2017), won Gold Awards at the New York Festival. The Bullseye Killer (2011) won a BAFTA Cymru award. My short film, This Is Not A Poem, played at a number of festivals including Zebra in Berlin.
My books include Defying Hitler: The Germans Who Resisted Nazi Rule (Dutton Books, Penguin Random House) and Shadow Warriors: Daring Missions By Women of the OSS and SOE with Gordon Thomas, which has been published in five countries.
I ghost-wrote the miscarriage of justice investigation The Death of Justice (with Michael O’Brien), which was described as “explosive” by the Irish Post, “an important investigation” by The Guardian, and an “extraordinary, shocking and moving tale” by the Western Mail.
Aberfan, which I wrote with disaster survivor Gaynor Madgwick, has inspired a major new drama series.
To support young readers’ interest in history and biography I created a series of non-fiction books, including the story of two unsung heroes of Antarctic adventure, Edgar Evans and Perce Blackborow.
As a journalist I have contributed to many national and international newspapers including The Times, The Observer, The Wall Street Journal; most of the leading newspapers in Ireland, including the Irish Independent; and to the investigative pages of Private Eye.
